KHS SIXFIFTY 800 Carbon Frame

Introduction

A lot of thought and research went into this build to put together a bike that is an everyday goto bike.  Starting point was my favorite riding bike, the Nishiki Anasazi - https://mtbnwpa.com/sNS,  Geometry needed to be as close as possible to the Anasazi and wanted to go with a carbon frame. Over on Random Bike Parts website, I found a KHS SIXFIFTY 800 frame.  All sizes were available. So out came the tape measure and did a comparison between the KHS and the Nishiki frame dimensions. I found the KHS medium frame was the closest match.  However the KHS overall stack height was closer with the large frame. Overall stack height was the factor in deciding on the large frame..

To get the correct overall stack height, the fork had to have a >495mm axle to crown dimension.  Fork options were few. On one side are inexpensive chinese forks <$100 and on the other end, top manufacturers that cost >$500.  Nothing in between. So I gambled on the <$100 fork.

The KHS SIXFIFTY 800 and Nishiki Anasazi frame are both mountain bike geometry.  The KHS frame is listed as a 27.5 frame and the Nishiki a 700c. Difference between the 2 frames is the chainstay length and axle to seatpost tube length.  The KHS has a shorter chainstay than the Nishiki. In researching tire diameters, the 700c x 38c tires I want to run are only +3mm larger OD than the 27.5 x 2.2 tires that came on the KHS mountain bike.  The KHS frame should be able to handle up to 700c x 44c (29 x 1.75) or 27.5 x 2.3 tires.

The KHS frame uses a direct mount, bottom pull, e-type front derailleur.  This means the largest chainring that can be used on a 2x setup is a 38t outer chainring and 28t inner.  The only limit I have found thus far with a 38t chainring is limited speed on the downhills. Climbing is its strength.
