Winter Ride

I just got done with this winter bike build with just the spare parts in my garage. Studded tires, fenders and pogies.

About

With winter knocking on the door, I started thinking about what I would be riding.  I do have a new Saris H3 trainer, however I absolutely hate riding a trainer.  With that, I looked at the existing bikes in my garage and of course I could ride my mountain bike when the snow on the trails are not too deep.  The road bike is on the trainer.  The Breezer with 3.0 tires is good most of the time once the fat tire bikes break through the virgin show, but it isn't all that good on the road or on ice.  The hybrid is good on dirt, dry trails and pavement.

I needed something that could ride on icy roads and trails.  I had nothing.  But I looked around the garage and had a bunch of parts.  To the most part these parts are new or lightly used.  Starting with a frame I stripped and painted a couple years ago, I mounted it into the maintenance stand and started adding parts.  What you see in the photos is the end result.

Parts List

Overall I am happy with the parts used.  This bike did not cost me any trips to the LBS to complete and was entirely from spare parts.  To help protect against the harsh environments I required this bike to have sealed bearings in the headset, wheels, and bottom bracket.  This bike also needed tires that could handle the icy roads and trails.

Here is what I came up with.
